We Are Family movie Reviews

Movie: We Are Family
Director: Siddharth P Malhotra
Actors: Kajol, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal

Karan Johar’s much awaited movie We Are Family has finally hit theatres on 2nd September. This emotional saga has failed to impress the audience unlike Kajol’s hit movies like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam. Kareena-Kajol duo has failed to create magic on the big screen.

What many might not know is that Dharma Productions’ We Are Family is an ‘official’ remake of Chris Columbus’ Stepmom [1998]. It’s a story of a woman and her kids and how their life changes dramatically when she is diagnosed with terminal illness. This Indianised version is basically a sob story mainly targeting family audience.

We Are Family Movie review

The story is about Aman (Arjun Rampal), a professional photographer and his ex-wife Maya (Kajol). Maya is a dedicated mother of Aleya (Aanchal Munjal), Ankush (Nominath Ginsburg), and Anjali (Diya Sonecha). A twist comes when Aman introduces his new love interest Shreya (Kareena Kapoor) to his kids who who refuses to accept her dad’s saasy girlfriend. When Maya is diagnosed with cervical cancer, circumstances force her to train Shreya as her kid’s stepmom. Now, two mothers and three kids are forced to stay under one roof.

Kajol’s performance is brilliant in the role of a terminally ill mom. Kareena has added glam to this movie and once again delivered a solid performance after Jab We Met. Arjun Rampal has handled the emotional moments very well and once again proved that he can act. Kids have also acted well in the movie

Debutant Director Siddharth P. Malhotra has managed to effectively portray emotional as well as light moments. First half of movie is entertaining while the second half is boring and slow. Cinematography is good enough and movie has been shot in exotic locations of Australia. Background score is pleasant and adds a sense of drama.

The climax is good but predictable. Full of emotions and drama, this movie of Karan Johar is a tearjerker. Its surely gonna attract kids and ladies to theatre. So if you are looking for an ultimate emotional drama and a decent family movie do watch it.

Peepli Live Movie Review Amir Khan Production Movie

Peepli Live Review: Writer-director Anusha Rizvi’s debut feature file which is remarkable powerful. Each frame of movie Peepli Live is full of rich detail and unspoken glances that tell as much of the story as the spoken words and shots that take the story forward. When the brand of AAMIR KHAN is linked with a movie, then the anticipations are attached at that place and the movie has to be around something out of the everyday work. That’s precisely the subject with PEEPLI (LIVE), which in an interesting manner, holds both the plus and minus vibes, grounded on the issue of grangers suicides found in India in the previous few yrs due to the unbearable pressure of droughts, floods and small levels of financial gain.

Peepli live Cast: Omkar Das Manikpuri, Raghuveer Yadav, Malaika Shenoy, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Shalini Vatsa, Farrukh Jaffer, Vishal O Sharma, Naseruddin Shah, Aamir Bashir, Sitaram Panchal, Yugal Kishore

Music on Peepli live: Indian Ocean/Brij Mandal/Bhadwai/Nageen Tanvir/Ram Sampat

Director of Peepli Live movie: Anusha Rizvi

Producer of Peepli Live movie: Aamir Khan/Kiran Rao

From a convention moviegoer viewpoint the movie is a very well entertainer but not real entertaining movie rights till its finish. The film starts off good with few soundly dialogues very backed by the abusive words as found out in the local slang of the small town. The viewer laughs aloud when the individuals talk to one another with all those “Gaallis” and contributed modifiers. And they further also relish the taunting speeches between the sickly grandmother lying down on the bed and her daughter in law. Among the two brothers in the film, Raghuvir Yadav, the older one is more pleasurable as equated to the heading hero of the film, Manikpuri as Natha. The time when younger brother declares his suicide, Raghuvir Yadav still stays as the funniest persona turning Natha day in and day out.

Later on its initial 30 minutes, the script primarily centers on the vast circus of media masses and politicians smattering Natha and his suicide proclamation. The tricky yet true portrayal of Channel TRPs, T.V. journalists and thirsty politicians watching out for the votes is without doubt make a vivid impression and performed brilliantly. But later on this all turns quite monotonic and repetitive. Until the scene of Natha’s fade the proceedings turn tardily and quite unexciting. Soon then the climax arrives just like as waited from a comic satire departure the viewer to imagine and let him get his own decisions over the finishing. However to some individuals, the end may also appear to be precipitous and not entertaining enough if equated to the whole film. Hence, facing from the tilt of a normal spectator, PEEPLI (Live) is a dear entertainer featuring few curious episodes and talkies. Except for the family audiences, bringing their kids along in the theatre, the opprobrious used in the dialogs may bring a certain sort of embarrassment.

Aisha Movie Review

Aisha Kapoor (Sonam Kapoor) Delhi’s upper class girl from super rich south Delhi family. Who love to set their own rules. The Anil Kapoor production film and his daughter sonam kapoor acting as Aisha in this movie. Aisha, a pampered girl, as her dad pays her credit card bills, loves playing matchmaker to just about everyone single she came across. She is smart, intelligent girl spending her time with usual art exhibiiton, polo matches, weekend gateways etc. The movie is based on the very famous novel written by Jane Austen named Emma. The fact that Aisha is a good looking film is undeniable. However, whether it is a good movie or not depends a lot on the audience’s requirements. Those who wish to watch a casual chick flick, Aisha will be more than satisfactory as it provides some light breeze entertainment that can be enjoyed over popcorn. However, if you are looking for some serious soul searching, this is not the movie for you.

Aisha and its director Rajshree Ojha should be complemented for trying to walk out of the clichéd male dominance that we are so used to seeing in Bollywood movies. At the core of it is Sonam Kapoor, who tries very hard to find the right match for her friends. Based on Jane Austen’s Emma, with a beautiful Delhi backdrop the movie centers around Sonam and her friends. The male lead has been played by Abhay Deol who plays her friend while Cyrus is one of the guys she tries to hook up with her friends. Although, they do not get a lot of screen time, both the male characters do a very good job in what is predominantly a movie for the ladies.

Cast: Sonam Kapoor (As Aisha), Abhay Deol, Ira Dubey, Anjali Puri, Cyrus Sahukar, Arunoday Singh
Direction: Rajshree Ojha

There are two aspects of the movie which stand out. The costume designs of the movie are amazing. They are very stylish and are sure to start some new fashion trends. The characters have been very well stylized although their personalities have not been explicitly built. The other aspect of the movie is its music and Amit Trivedi of Dev D fame has delivered once again. There are some soulful numbers and some peppy ones too. On the whole the story is not very fresh and the layers are very superficial. But the movie is beautiful and wouldn’t certainly bore you to death, especially if you want to relax and watch some lovely colors and trends.

Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Movie Review

Once upon a time in Mumbai, 1970’s Mumbai underworld, when the smuggling is heinous crime in innocent society, Sultan Mirza (Ajay Gevgn — referencing Haji Mastan) was the mafia don. The movie – Once upon a Time in Mumbai – shows rise and reign of sultan as a glorified Robin Hood type figure. The movie does reopens the familiar Mumbai’s most well known underworld crime story – the stormy relationship between Haji Mastan (Sultan Mirza – Ajay Devgn) and Dawood Ibrahim (Emran Hashmi).

The movie takes us back to the 70s and everything including the dresses and the music remind us of that beautiful era when innocence was to disappear from Mumbai and crime was finding a new face. Two actors who could play the roles in their sleep do it once again and the result it is a movie that is above average if not stunning. The top critics have all rated it very highly and in all probability Milan Luthria and Ekta Kapoor seem to have a winner on own hand.

Ajay Devgan plays his role as the slightly soft hearted criminal who is shrewd at smuggling very well. Emran Hashmi is the impetuous guy who wants power and money and wants it quickly. The clear contrast between the gentler ways of the former and the impulsive greed of the other have been presented very well and the seasoned actors have done a great job. Kangna Ranaut as a popular Bollywood actress of the 70s looks charming and the romantic angle between her and Devgan certainly has some fire. The sizzling chemistry between Prachi Desai, especially in her Bobby style outfit and Emran Hashmi is another great part about the movie and Prachi Desai retains the sweet innocence from the Rock On days.

The music of the movie is melodious and refreshing and is very much hummable. The supporting cash including Randeep Hooda as a policeman does an excellent job too. One of the best parts about the movies is the dialogues and the coldness with which they are delivered too. Emraan’s dialogue about smoke and ash is one of the more memorable ones and would be remembered for quite a while. All in all, the movie is worth a watch for reminiscing the 70s when the crime scene was just about to explode.

Khatta Meetha (2010): Movie review

The name itself suggests one of the greatest philosophies of life that it consists of both sweet and sour ingredients. This film is a remake of a very old Malayalam movie and tries to drive home the reality of the Indian road system in a very humorous and comic backdrop. The movie marks the debut of acclaimed South Indian heroine Trisha Krishnan and also the producing debut of the versatile actor Akshay Kumar. He has more than amply proved himself in two extreme genres of Bollywood cinema, comedy and action. This movie is going to be a fun riot with Priyadarshan, known for his rib tickling comedies at the helm.

The trio of Akshay Kumar, Paresh Raval and the director Priyadarshan has spelt magic previously through Hera Pheri, which is considered to be amongst the best comedies over the last decade in Bollywood. Now the bar is set even higher and with Rajpal Yadav, the man who effortlessly makes people laugh, joining the team, one can expect a lot without being disappointed. Sachin Tichkule played by Akshay is a man struggling to be a road construction contractor. But he cannot get anywhere because he doesn’t have enough money to bribe the officials and nothing moves in the country without bribery, as is sarcastically depicted through the dialogues between Akshay and Rajpal.

Matters go worse for Akshay when Trisha comes as the local PWD officer. She was his ex girlfriend in college days and now literally hates him. The story also shows the rampant corruption in the government and touches upon the famous murder of PWD engineer Yogendra Pandey in 2009. This would be a joy ride for the audience as Sachin bumps into one disaster after another. It will be interesting to watch how he deals with bribery in the official ranks on one side and his tension with the PWD officer, his ex girlfriend with whom he broke up, on another end.

Udaan – Movie Review

Director: Vikramaditya Motwane
Cast: Rajat Barmecha, Ronit Roy, Ram Kapoor, Aayan Boradia.

Anurag Kashyap and Vikramdaitya Motwane have given us a fabulous tale this time whose depth lies in the layers it tries to analyze and unfurl rather in the complexity of the plot. At no point is it easy to guess that this is Vikramaditya’s first movie as a director as the cuts are clean and the emotions real. Udaan is the story of a young guy who is learning to flap his wings against the tyranny of his father. The movie starts on a lighter note with Rohan played by Rajat Barmecha, caught along with his friends watching an adult movie away from hostel and then expelled. Rohan has to live his dad who is a widower and has another son from another wife, with Rohan never having met his younger step-brother.

The movie’s greatness not lies so much in the complexity of the plot as it is in the complexity of the characters. The father, played by Ronit Roy depicts a multitude of characters where the need to rule and impose wins over the need to love. Both Ronit and Rajat have turned in fine performances as two ends of a strained relationship which doesn’t know how to bloom. This being one dimension of the film lends a base. Another dimension comes with the focus on the frustration of young people who need to vent out their dissatisfaction by rebelling, which includes tiny joys like smoking secretively, stealing a car and escaping at midnight to watch adult movies etc.

The third dimension of the film is given by the aspirations of Rohan to become a writer. The struggle of the young lad to pursue his interest instead of studying engineering and working in his dad’s factory is what is referred ironically as Udaan, where the young man finally learns to follow his dreams and fly high. The cast of the film doesn’t consist of superstars, yet on the acting front they do an amazing job at delivering emotions without too much mish mash. The cinematography by Mahendra Shetty brings out the emotions and moods very well while the music suits the story even though not outright sensational like Amit Trivedi’s previous Dev D.

Tere Bin Laden – Movie Review

Humor, they say is highly underrated aspect in most movies. A movie can be dubbed purely on the basis of how much humor it packs and how much the audience is entertained. Tere Bin Laden, is an absolute joy and promises to be a fun ride, where every person in the audience will come out in a lighter shape from the movie hall than he went in. It is more of a spoof than anything else because in terms of plot there isn’t much intensity or high voltage drama. Ali works as a reporter for a local news channel and being exploited badly dreams of going to US where the job prospects are much better. However, an incident involving a knife found in his bag, ensures that he cannot board the flight and then never manages to get the Visa, how much ever he tries.

He needs money to pay to a middleman who promises to get him a Visa. What follows next is an unbelievable sequence of comic events where Ali comes across Noora played by Pradhuman Singh, who after minor makeup and changes resembles Osama Bin Laden. Ali believes this is his ticket to US and creates a video with Pradhuman in Osama’s makeover delivering a message and sells it to his local news channel head. The video creates a furor and soon all the characters including Ali and his accomplices played by Sugandha, Chirag and Rahul find themselves in a spot of bother.

The movie director is debutant Abhishek Sharma, who surprises everyone with the crispness of the movie and the neatness of the story delivery. Ali Zafar and Pradhuman were both amazing with their roles and together with other characters have provided a spontaneous laugh riot. Most of the comic scenes look effortless which adds to their charm. Although the actors are relatively inexperienced, their performance doesn’t suggest so. The plot of the movie stays focused and is not diverted by side tracks like romance which is what keeps the laugh riot going all the time. The weirdness of the subject broached in itself is worth half the credit and all in all it is a fun movie worth watching.
